Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU)

  • Description

    Adults (over 16) with stable acute surgical conditions should be referred directly to the Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU) at the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital

  • Patient types/symptoms

    All surgical conditions requiring urgent surgical assessment / admission:
    - Painful jaundice
    - Abdominal pains requiring urgent assessment / admission
    - Biliary problems requiring urgent assessment
    - Abscesses including perianal

    Exclusions:
    - Patients with potentially infective diarrhoea
    - Patients who are haemodynamically unstable or NEWS score of six or greater.
    - adults (over 16) who do not meet the criteria should be sent directly to the emergency department at the Northumbria hospital
    - Rectal bleeding
    - urological emergencies

    8am-10pm (last referral 7pm) seven days a week

    After these times please refer through the emergency department.
