North Tyneside Integrated Musculoskeletal Service (NTIMS)

  • Description

North Tyneside Integrated Musculoskeletal Service (NTIMS) is a community based service developed to help patients with musculoskeletal problems manage their condition in the most effective way. It is accessed by GP referral via ERS to a single point of access. The service is designed to identify the most appropriate care for each patient – this could be musculoskeletal physiotherapy or assessment by an Advanced Musculoskeletal Practitioner (GP or Specialist Physiotherapist). It aims to enhance the management of patients with musculoskeletal conditions, support patients with self-management and investigate and treat patients where appropriate.

  • Patient types/symptoms

Patients must be registered with a North Tyneside GP and be over 18 years old. Conditions treated include spinal pain, joint and soft tissue problems where surgery is not the first line of management.

Exclusions include patients with suspected cancer, patients with red flag symptoms, e.g. cauda equina, serious infection, systemically unwell, patients with widespread neurology, patients with suspected inflammatory arthritis and those in their own homes.

Patients requiring physiotherapy assessment for non-musculoskeletal conditions, including women's health, elderly care, domiciliary care, degenerative neurological conditions, paediatrics and respiratory physiotherapy, should be referred via the usual service request/physiotherapy form on ICE.

  • Location

Patients with less complex conditions can be seen by a musculoskeletal physiotherapist at a clinic held at a GP surgery nearest their home:

  • Opening Times

    - Monday to Friday, 8.30am-5pm
    - Evening clinics: Tuesday and Thursday
    - Saturday clinics: North Tyneside General Hospital

Referral Information

Referrals via e-Referral (under the specialty physiotherapy and clinic type musculoskeletal) using the referral proforma (found under useful forms). Please ensure the referral letter is attached as we are unable to review the referral without this. This will help avoid any unnecessary delay.

Referrals will be clinically triaged by an advanced MSK practitioner within two working days of receipt. Referrals can be allocated to MSK physiotherapy, specialist clinics or, where appropriate forwarded to a hospital secondary care service with choice offered to each patient.

If patients require an appointment they will be sent a letter asking them to call a direct number to book their appointment. They will be advised which clinic to attend and will be given an appointment within 15 working days.
