TIA Rapid Access Clinic

  • Patient types/symptoms

    High or undetermined risk of TIA:
    Patients with ABCD2 scores of 3 or higher, or who have had more than one episode, or have associated atrial fibrillation, or where these risk factors cannot be immediately excluded should be referred by immediate phone call to the Stroke Specialist Nurse on call (telephone 0191 607 2862). Patients will usually be assessed at the Northumbria Hospital on the same day.

    Low risk of TIA:
    Adults with possible diagnosis of low risk TIA (and only when higher risk can be confidently excluded) should be referred by fax using the TIA referral proforma to 0191 2932793 (Dr Curless secretary, North Tyneside General Hospital) or 01670 529183 (Dr Huntley secretary, Wansbeck General Hospital) or 01434 655680 (Dr Edmonds secretary, Hexham General Hospital). Referrals will usually be triaged on the same day and appointments sent or phoned to patients to attend clinics at our general hospitals, usually within a week of referral.
